My road came to an unexpected halt on November 9, 2010.

That morning, I was bicycling to work when a garbage truck turned across a city bike lane. I was in that bike lane.

A team of trauma surgeons saved my life, but they had to amputate my left leg. My body and life were forever changed.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

As I learned to walk again, I measured my recovery in steps and then miles. Over time that journey grew into something more -- a way of being in the world, wherever I go.

I am a person of ability and disability. I travel in the space between. These are my postcards.

Thank You Jefferson

Mile Marker 160:

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes out to all my doctors, nurses and friends at Jefferson Hospital who organized a first anniversary walk for me on November 9, 2011.

Thank you for your outstanding care this year.  For seeing me through the long months, weeks, and days -- through the biggest hours and the smallest ones.

For keeping me safe and holding me close with your skillful hands and wide open hearts.

And for walking with me EVERY STEP of the way!

  2. Hi Rebecca,

This is so awesome! Congrats on 160 miles!! I was at a swim meet with the Georgetown team on Saturday and thankfully I didn't have to swim the mile, but I swam my 100 yard free in your honor!

I'm sorry I/we have not been in touch with you sooner but our families prayers have been with you since we heard of your accident....with love from an old neighborhood friend, Peter Johnson....

  5. Hi, Rebecca -

I remember you as Ricki. I think we were in ecology club together at UDHS. I was a grade below you. Anyway, some UD friends sent me the WPVI story on you - and wow! First of all, you look fantastic. Secondly, I am very sorry you had to endure your accident. But, I'm glad you are triumphing over it. Your 1,000 mile goal is brilliant, and it's true what the hospital guy at the end of the WPVI piece said - you are going to inspire A LOT of people with your attitude and actions!

If you ever feel like running a marathon, let me know. I'll do it with you. I'm running my 13th next March - Jerusalem.

    My absolute best regards,

    Scott (Frank) Piro
